Webb1 jan. 2024 · Using data from 101 dairy farms, we calculated an average cost for rearing a heifer to calving of £1819, or £2.31/day. It took farms an estimated 530 days, or 1.5 lactations, to repay this cost. Age at first calving (AFC) ranged from 21 to 32 months between farms, with later calving significantly more expensive. WebbWell grown heifers. Heifers reaching target liveweight will produce 8.5kgMS more in their first lactation than if they are 10% below target liveweight. Heifers reaching target liveweight will have 5% better 6wk in-calf rates and 1.5% lower empty rates. This equates to $35 economic benefit per heifer compared to heifers 10% below target liveweight.
