It is the most species-rich and widespread genus in the subfamily Scarabaeinae (the 'true' dung beetles), with a global distribution. Some of the subgenera (including Proagoderus, Diastellopalpus, Digitonthophagus, Strandius, and Euonthophagus) are now widely recognized as genera.
