WebJul 1, 2011 · Since wars were first fought, armies have known that battlefield awareness is the key to success: surveyors, with their knowledge of terrain, have been responsible for topography and maps, and engineers have been responsible for fortifications. Then George Washington created the Geographer of the Army position in 1777. WebTraditionally, draughtsmen sat at drawing boards and used compasses, dividers, protractors, triangles and other drafting devices to prepare a drawing manually. Most draughtspersons now use computer-aided drafting (CAD) systems to prepare drawings. These systems employ computer workstations which create a drawing on a video screen.
